Bed and Breakfast Mid Cornwall

Menkee Georgian farmhouse Bed and Breakfast  Near Bodmin Cornwall

Menkee Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast Cornwall We highly recommend Menkee and have stayed there ourselves with our children.

The hosts  (Gage and Liz) are very friendly and helpful.  Our sons loved the House and the breakfast choice was one of the best we had ever had.  Menkee has comfortable beds and cosy rooms.  Ideal for that weekend away.  Phil & Sue (Genius Loci)

Beautiful listed Georgian farmhouse with spectacular gardens and view towards the north Cornish coast.'

Menkee - Cornish for Dog Stone - was built in about 1750 as a working farm on Colquite Estate that had been owned by the Hoblyn family for over 800 years from Domesday to the late 1980s. The Williams family have owned Menkee Farmhouse (Grade 2 Listed) since 1963.

Gage and Liz took on the house from Gage's father in 1997 and have successfully let The Gardenhouse, a self catering converted coach-house that has its own walled garden and sleeps 6 to 8 since 1999. In 2004, Liz decided to offer bed and breakfast in the Farmhouse as well.

B&B Prices

Menkee Bed and Breakfast Bodmin Cornwall Each with a super king size and the other with a king size - one is en-suite with a shower and loo and the other has its own (unless the two single bedrooms are also occupied) bath/shower-room and loo down a short passage.

There are also two single bedrooms each with 3 ft wide beds.

Check out is by 10 am.

Gardens
Menkee is set in 2½ acres of mature gardens with a large variety of camellias, magnolias and azaleas which are at their spectacular best from February through to June, thereafter the roses, clematis and hydrangeas continue the colour through to late September.

Liz has arranged many tours of the Great Cornish Gardens and can advise garden lovers on where to visit before and during their stay. Gardens of note are Pencarrow, Lanhydrock, Trewithen, Heligan, Eden Project (15 miles), Trewithen, Trebah and, by helicopter from Penzance, Tresco in The Scillies.

Walking in Cornwall
Menkee is well placed for walking the SW Coastal Pathway, especially the nearby stretch from Tintagel to Trevose and The Saints Way, a two day walk from Padstow to Fowey. There are many nearby footpaths and a choice of walks on Bodmin Moor to Rough Tor and Brown Willy. Given notice, Gage & Liz can help with dropping walkers off or picking them up.

Where to Eat
There is a wide range of excellent food close to Menkee from pub food at St Kew, St Mabyn itself, The Malster's Arms at Chapel Amble, St Breward et al to mid-priced restaurants in Wadebridge (5 miles) rising to Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant in Padstow or the St Enodoc Hotel and Black Pig in Rock. Rick has two cheaper restaurants in Padstow which now boasts about 15 restaurants.

Pet Friendly
We have an old lab, a lively springer and a young Norfolk terrier - we are prepared to allow guests to bring dogs provided they remain downstairs and preferably sleep in owners' cars. Please negotiate before arrival. We are non-smokers.

Getting There
Menkee is at Grid ref SAX 057726 one mile due east of St Mabyn just off the Bodmin to Camelford B3266. The house is shown on Ordnance Survey maps Landranger 200 and Explorer 109. We can e-mail maps to you.

Coming from Exeter, the best turn off the A30 is 2 miles short of Bodmin, through Helland, over Hellandbridge up to the cross roads with the B3266. Turn right, ignoring the almost immediate turning to the left to St Mabyn and go 500m and take the next left, opposite tall fir trees, down a 200m lane to the Farmhouse that can be seen from the road. Go through the left hand white gate. In low season allow 1 hr from Exeter and 2 hrs from Bristol.
